Heat flux sensors measure a flow of thermal energy between two media by means of convection, conduction, and/or radiation.  While temperature sensors such as thermocouples and RTDs only provide measurements of temperature, heat flux sensors can quantify the actual thermal energy transfer and in what direction.  The information acquired from directly measuring a flow of heat is useful for a variety of applications.
